PUPPY NEWBORN CARE & RECOMMENDATIONS

Incubator & Whelping Box Temperature Recommendations

Week 1 - 84-89 degrees F
Week 2 - 80 degrees F
Week 3 - 75 degrees F
Week 4 - 70 degrees F

Puppies will regulate their own body temperature if they can get away from the heat source
Humidity levels should be 50%-60% (This can be slightly higher 65%-70% for premature puppies but we do no recommend a lower than 40% humidity level to prevent dehydration
Puppy Weight Gain

Puppies should gain roughly 1-2 gram/lb/day
Birth to 4 weeks (Puppies weight should double every 7 days) The puppies nutritional needs will be met with milk alone
4 to 8 weeks (weight should double every 14 days) At 4 weeks milk will not meet the nutritional needs and caloric requirements of puppies alone and you will need to encourage weaning
Bottle/Nurser Feeding Puppies 1cc/ml per oz of body weight

Puppies should be fed 1cc/ml per oz of body weight (rounded down) This means if you have a puppy that weighs 8.7 ounces you should round down to 8cc's/ml's of formula every 2-3 hours per feeding.
Premature puppies should be fed more often half the amount (Example: Feed a 4.5 oz puppy 2cc's/ml's every 1-1 1/2 hours). The smaller amounts will help the puppies from getting a loose stool. A normal feeding schedule above can be resumed when the puppy reaches a normal birth weight.
Lifeline Nursers should be chosen according to birth weight and following week weights of puppies (Example: puppies of 5oz birth weight would need a 5cc/ml nurser and would choose a Medium Breed Sample Pack or Combo Pack of nursers). This will cover the growing stages of that weight class of puppies.
Puppies who can latch onto a regular baby bottle nipple will do well on our (Large Nipple) nursers. This includes the Large Breed and Extra Large Breed nursers in the (Large Nipple) style.
If you have babies who are unable to latch onto a baby bottle style nipple they will do well with our smaller nipple "Real Feel" nursers or "Modified" nursers. The Real Feel nursers require you to make your own nipple hole. The Modified nursers are modified by us and come with a premade hole.
Extremely Weak Puppies who are unable to nurse

Puppies who are too weak to nurse even from our nursers can be sponge fed with one of our Lifeline LifeSaver Sponge Kits. Tube Feeding is a last resort but can be useful in saving a puppy near death or that is unable to nurse from the above methods. We recommend a 8 French Feeding Tube for a puppy under 300 grams & a 10 French Tube for a puppy over 300 grams

Orpahaned Puppy Feeding Care

Orphaned puppies should be burped with 10-12 second taps to the chest
Make sure to stimulate the puppies to encourage the puppy to urinate/feces
Wash puppies daily with a warm cloth and bathe once a week
Keep areas clean and sanitized to reduce the risk of infection

Received my incubator today--you can call it a puppy incubator, but I'm going to call it a kitty one ;) I am very impressed with the whole product and have already recommended it to the Savannah cat breeding community ;) Thanks!
